Upon your first visit, an initial evaluation will be performed to determine your specific needs and an individualized plan will be customized specifically for you. Physical Therapy
Physical therapists (PT) provide services to people to develop, maintain, and restore maximum movement and functional ability to patients suffering from injuries or disease. They examine patients’ medical histories and then measure the patient’s strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and/or motor function. Therapist can improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit physical disabilities to help improve independence and facilitate reintegration into the community or work place.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists (OT) help people improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments including decision-making, abstract-reasoning, and problem-solving. They assist in a variety of daily living skills including dressing, cooking, and eating. Occupational therapists also improve movement and function by using exercise and physical agents to improve range of movement, improve strength and reduce pain. Occupational therapy helps individuals achieve independence and focus on developing, recovering, and maintaining daily living and working skills.

Speech Therapy
Speech-language pathologists (SLP) assess, diagnose, and treat individuals who have speech disorders that affect a person’s speech, language, cognition, voice disorders and swallowing disorders. SLP’s work with people who cannot produce speech sounds, those with speech rhythm and fluency problems, and those with problems understanding and producing language. SLP’s can also help people who wish to improve their communication skills by modifying an accent and those with cognitive communication impairments such as attention, memory, and problem solving disorders.

Certified Hand Therapy
Hand Therapy is a high degree of specialization in rehabilitating patients with problems affecting hands and arms. A hand therapist is an occupational or physical therapist who, through advanced study, are highly skilled in evaluating: wounds and scars, edema, strength and endurance, pain, range of motion, sensibility, activities of daily living, work activities, and avocational activities. This high degree of specialization enables the hand therapists to work effectively with patients and hasten their return to a productive lifestyle.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
At Brazosport Regional Health System, we offer 3 Phases of Cardiac Rehabilitation to provide you with a full range of services. Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed to help patients with heart disease recover faster from cardiac surgical procedures, maximize quality of life and return to full and productive lives. Our goal is to reduce your chances of another occurrence of heart problems.
    Phase I
Phase I Cardiac Rehabilitation is cardiac exercise with clinical professionals during a hospitalization for cardiac related conditions. This phase is designed for individuals to receive low-level exercise and for patients and their families to receive education to help reduce risk factors for cardiac disease. This phase allows you to benefit from early mobilization and exercise, thereby reducing your length of stay in the hospital.

    Phase II
Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation is a hospital-based program that begins approximately 2-4 weeks after discharge. It requires a doctor’s order and is usually covered by insurance programs if you have experienced a heart attack, a heart stent surgery, a coronary artery bypass surgery, a heart valve replacement or a heart transplant. Your sessions will be scheduled two-to-three times a week for an hour at a time for 12-18 weeks. This phase emphasizes monitoring your heart with continuous ECG while you exercise. Phase II exercise equipment includes treadmills, bicycles, recumbent bikes, weight training and arm ergometer. Your exercise plan will be based on your individual ability, needs and interests. Plus, you will receive education, counseling and training to help you understand your heart condition and find ways to reduce your risk of future heart problems. Education classes are available once a week and include:
    • Understanding Coronary Artery Disease and Risk Factors
    • Know Your Medications
    • Cholesterol and Your Heart
    • Diabetes and Heart Disease
    • A Lifetime of Good Eating
    • Staying Cool--Managing Stress with Heart Disease
    • Advanced Medical Directives
    • Lifestyle Changes for a Healthier Heart

    Phase III (Risk Factor Reduction)
Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation is for patients who have completed Phase II and wish to continue cardiac conditioning. It is designed for individuals who have known risk factors for heart disease. This phase requires medical clearance to participate and is a monthly, self-pay wellness program. Phase IIII participants are supervised by clinical professionals during exercise and use the same equipment listed in Phase II.
Either young or old, almost everyone with heart disease can benefit from Cardiac Rehabilitation. Cardiac Rehabilitation will help you feel better faster, get stronger, reduce stress, reduce the risks of future heart problems, and even live longer.
